In my 10+ years of experience working with adolescents, young adults and families, I have strived to create a non-judgemental space where my clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and feelings and empowered to make positive change. Adolescence into young adulthood (and parenting through it all!) is a challenging time of life and it can quickly become overwhelming. During sessions, we look at crises and difficult situations from varying perspectives that can offer fresh and effective solutions for anxiety, depression, substance abuse and family conflict.
It is so important when working with teens to understand their perspective and validate their feelings while recognizing that the significant adults in their lives may have a different take. How do we reconcile these differing views so all can feel understood and appreciated? How can they get to a point of being able to support each other instead of complicate things and hurt each other? These are focal points that I keep a priority in my work. When working with the family as a whole, we explore how the family works as a system and move away from the notion of needing to "fix" a particular individual.
It is so rewarding watching clients and their families realize more fully their potential. They experience joy again as they become “unstuck” from whatever was holding them hostage - old wounds, bad habits, unhealthy communication patterns. Equally rewarding is helping family members bond with one another. They grow a better understanding of and appreciation for one another and work together on shared goals. When everyone can join in and work on shared goals, they can see change - sustained.
Clients come to therapy struggling:
INTERNALLY (anxiety/depression/trauma),
EXTERNALLY (school issues/behavioral concerns/substance abuse) and
INTERPERSONALLY (peer/family relationships).
To the TEEN...do you feel like others just don't get it...that life is increasingly complicated as you grow more independent and responsibilities pile up while still having to adhere to the rules of the adults around you...are you overwhelmed with feelings of depression and anxiety and just can't see life past them....are you trying to think about what your purpose in life might be and what direction you're supposed to move in, while feeling powerless to move...do you want to solve your own problems, but sometimes they just feel too big? It can be easy to lose hope - you turn on yourself and those you care about.
To the PARENT... are you walking the line with contemplating how much freedom to give so that your child can learn from mistakes while not jeopardizing their safety...wondering how to show that you love your child while not coming across as distrusting or overbearing...questioning how to offer your child help without it pushing them further away? It can be easy to lose hope and feel stuck - not knowing where to place blame and responsibility.
